"What if I fail to start the fifth team? I will continue to throw as a starter even when I go to the second team."

Kim Yoo-sung (23), a right-hander of the Doosan Bears in professional baseball, started the first practice game of the spring camp against Segasami, a Japanese business team, at Kiyotake Sports Park in Miyazaki, Japan, on the 21st and showed good pitching with no hits, two strikeouts, and two outs in two innings. 

Manager Lee Seung-yeop picked Kim Yu-seong, who is in the race to become the first starting pitcher for the warm-up match of the spring camp. Kim Yu-seong was in danger of scoring a point after allowing Takamoto to hit the ground running with one out in the top of the first inning, before the first baseman stole second base. It was easy to get off the ground early in the second inning. He sent Kitakawa, the leadoff batter, to second base on a fly ball and Hirooka to strike out swinging, quickly increasing the number of outs. As his ball control was shaky for a while, he allowed Fukumori to get on base, but ended the inning by throwing Miyamura to second base on a fly ball. He handed over the mound to Choi Joon-ho at the top of the third inning to complete his mission. 

Pass points were awarded at the first actual audition. Swippers, curves, and folk balls that were newly polished under the maximum speed of 150 kilometers were added to demonstrate the results of the first spring camp training. Although ball control has often been pointed out as a problem since joining the team, the team has received on-site evaluation that the speed of the fastball and the angle of the sweeper are excellent.

After the game, Kim Yu-seong expressed satisfaction with the completeness of the sweeper pitches. "I think 80 to 90 percent of the pitches are complete. I think I just need to control the ball well because I can't blame him for the speed limit. Setting a target is my top priority, and I'm planning to practice more because it's a little hard to catch it," he said. 

Doosan gave up eight runs to the Japanese team, which was considered one step lower. Kim Min-kyu allowed five runs in two innings and Choi Jong-in allowed three runs in one inning. Kim Yu-seong, Choi Joon-ho, Kim Myung-shin, and Park Ji-ho recorded no runs, but out of a total of six pitchers, only Kim Yu-seong did not allow any hits. In fact, the field cited Kim's improvement as the biggest gain in the first exhibition game. 

"At first, I thought batters were not good at swinging because they made it difficult, but the more I played against them, the better I was. When I came into the dugout, I told my brothers that hitters seemed to be good. I was lucky with my pitches," Kim said. 

Kim Yoo-sung, who achieved his dream of becoming a professional player by ranking 19th in the second round of Doosan in the 2023 Rookie Draft, challenged the 5th starting position in his third year as a professional. In recognition of his potential since last year's educational league, he has been competing in good faith with Choi Joon-ho, Kim Min-kyu and Choi Won-joon, and Lee Seung-yeop held an audition for the 5th starting pitcher and gave Kim Yoo-sung, Choi Joon-ho and Kim Min-kyu two innings each. 

For now, Kim doesn't mind the competition much. He is quietly carrying out his plan under the belief that if he throws his pitches, he will become the fifth starter. "I didn't care who will throw today. I just wanted to do what I prepared," Kim said. "The result is fixed anyway. I don't intend to do anything new in the process. I am determined to do my best as much as I can." 

Kim mentioned the stipulated innings as his goal for this year. And to achieve that, he has to play a role in the starting rotation. He said, "I want to throw the stipulated innings because I think winning requires a lot of luck. I will focus on playing as many innings as possible."

Asked by reporters whether he was confident in settling down as a starter, he also expressed confidence, saying, "I hope so. I think I'm okay so far because I've built my body so well."

What will happen to Kim's next plan if he is eliminated from the competition to start the fifth team? "Nothing has been decided yet. But I want to continue throwing as a starter. I will throw as a starter even when I get to the second team," Kim said, expressing his ambition to become a fifth starter.
